Marian has been a Judicial Officer for 17 years.
72% of a Probate Judge¹s docket comes from the Family Division of Circuit Court. As a Referee for Family Division Courts in five area counties, Marian has conducted thousands of hearings and issued prompt, fair and well-explained Court Orders in divorce, parenting time, custody, child/spousal support, paternity and Personal Protection Orders cases.
Marian's experience mirrors the responsibilities of a Probate Judge.
Marian has criminal law trial and appellate experience. Probate Judges also handle child protective proceedings, termination of parental rights and juvenile delinquency matters: all quasi-criminal matters. Marian has extensive experience in District Court, Circuit Court, the Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court. She knows the law and the procedures. When asked to assist in District or Circuit Court Marian will know the territory.
Marian has family law experience. A Probate Judge¹s caseload is almost all related to family related disputes covering ³birth to grave². Marian is a member of the Family Law, Probate Law and Children Law Sections of the State Bar. She works with mental health and financial specialists. She understands family dynamics and is well versed in property law. Marian has provided legal services, retained and pro bono, to families in crisis.
Marian has dispute resolution experience. 95% of all court cases settle before trial. Marian was the first attorney trained as a Domestic Relations Mediator in our area, has conducted over 300 mediations, and is on the board of the Collaborative Practice Institute of Michigan. Marian has advanced mediation and negotiation skills necessary for effective management of court resources.
